Another Squirrel Attack

Last year, we had an exclusion done to repair holes that squirrels had chewed in the side of our house and to make sure they were all out of our attic.

Today, I woke up to the pitter patter of little squirrel feet running across our attic. Or, it could have been mouse feet. Our pest control man came out today, and we couldn’t find any holes when we walked around the house. There’s a slight possibility that a squirrel could have gotten in through the vents on the side of the house, and if that’s the case it’s an easy fix. If it’s mice, it’s an easy fix as well. He’s going to bring a trap by tomorrow and put it in our crawl space, and he’ll also put some bait in my attic. I plan to be locked in the bathroom in case squirrels and mice come falling out.

The Great Box Project of ’08

It’s like a whole new world in our storage room.

The before:

And the after:

And all the trash we threw out:

Miraculously, it only took us two Sundays to get our carport cleaned out and our storage room organized (the boxes on the side are all trash). And, before you ask, no, it hadn’t looked like that since we moved in last year. We actually had everything cleaned and organized. Then, Joe’s parents decided to put their house up for sale and started bombarding us with boxes and boxes and more boxes. I think we threw out most of the things they gave us. But, until we had time to go through everything, the boxes sat out in our carport. Yes, we knew we looked like rednecks but we’ve been so busy we haven’t really been home long enough to spend time on it.

It’s so nice to go into my storage room to do laundry and see how neat and orderly everything is. Now, we have to tackle the rest of the house which kind of got torn apart while we took apart and repacked boxes. That won’t be as bad, though. What projects around the house are on your to-do list?

Dream Houses

On one episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, the crew put a movie room in the new house because the family loves to watch movies with each other and with their friends. Ever since I saw that, I thought it would be so neat to have a movie room in our house, complete with a popcorn machine and home theater sconces. We’d definitely be the cool kids on the block.

I think often about what I want in our next house. We won’t be moving for several years (and really, who can sell their houses now??), but I love thinking about our next house. I always have so much fun looking at houses as I drive around town and picking out the ones that I like. I love the brick exterior we have now, but I also like stone and siding. I definitely want at least a two-story house with at least 3 bedrooms, preferrably 4. The big thing is that it would have to have a finished basement. I need somewhere to house my scrap area, our workout equipment and, of course, our movie area! It also must have a large kitchen with room for an island, a breakfast nook and a separate dining room. I really miss having a dining room. What I would love to do is buy a piece of property and have the house built. That way I can have everything the way I want it. You can never find *exactly* what you dream of in houses that are already built.

So what do you want in your next house?

Unwanted Eaters

A few months ago, Joe and I bought several bird feeders for our back deck. We hung a Hummingbird feeder and a Finch feeder from the railing and put a regular bird feeder on top. Our Hummingbird food was gone pretty quickly, even though we’ve never seen any Hummingbirds at the feeder and our Finch food has gone untouched.

Our regular bird seed, though, gets devoured, and not by birds. I look out our sliding door several times during the day and see squirrels darting across the railing, stuffing their cheeks with bird seed and dashing off. My mother-in-law had a problem with squirrels at her bird feeder too. They totally destroyed hers, but we’ve been lucky so far. Ours is still in one piece. Still, I would much rather the *birds* be eating out of the bird feeder rather than squirrels.

However, I really don’t know how to dissuade them. I may try some critter control. There is also critter ridder, which is supposed to repel squirrels yet is supposed to be organic. I wonder if it affects birds, though. Do any of you have bird feeders at your homes, and do you have problems with squirrels eating your bird seed? What do you do or use to keep them away?

Long weekend, short run

In just two days, my three-day weekend will begin. Yay! I’m sure you all are looking forward to the long weekend like I am. We don’t have too much planned besides the 10k that Joe and my brother, Randy, are running on Labor Day. This will be Randy’s first race, so I’m really excited for him. And it’ll be good for Joe’s marathon training.

Since it’s pretty early in the morning, Randy and my parents are coming down Sunday evening to spend the night. It will be the first time I’ve hosted my parents here. I really need to get cracking now on getting the office/guest bedroom straightened up. It’s become our “catch all” room where we dump everything we don’t have a place for yet. I know they’ll understand, but I still want my house to be perfect. I’m really looking forward to having a weekend that we can dedicate to getting this place organized once and for all!
