have a nice life, moussaoui

zacarias moussaoui will spend the rest of his life in the federal supermax prison in colorado.

i applaud the jury for giving him life in prison without parole rather than the death penalty. some argue that he deserves to die for his role in the sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. i disagree. the fact that moussaoui wanted to be executed is precisely the reason the jury should not have sentenced him to death. why allow him to be a martyr? forcing him to spend the rest of his life in prison is much more of a punishment for him than death would be. his countrymen are the ones who killed themselves by hijacking planes and flying them into buildings in our country. they are not afraid of death.

i think u.s. district judge leonie brinkema, as quoted on cnn, summed it up perfectly: “you came here to be a martyr and die in a big bang of glory. but to paraphrase the poet t.s. eliot, instead you will die with a whimper.”

now moussaoui will join the ranks of past terrorists: richard reid, the unabomber and terry nichols. he will have a 7″ x 12″ cell 60 feet underground where he will spend 23 hours a day. have a nice life.

call me ms. grace

i think i broke my little toe.

then again, i’m a hypochondriac. it may just be sprained. in any case it hurts. a lot. you see, i was walking from the couch toward the dining room to shoo dizzy off the table (such an annoying habit he has of getting up there) when i happened to, you know, walk into one of the weights i had used in my workout this morning.

it was only a five-pounder, but it sure did some damage. my toe is red and hurts every time i get up, which is about every two minutes to get dizzy off the table, where he is happily chewing on my purse. however, by the time i’m halfway to the dining room he jumps down (he knows when i’m mad), and by the time i’ve sat back down on the couch he’s on the table again.

and yes, he’s a guy. no surprise there, eh?

now i’m off to hobble back to the couch.

the long, long week

“i can’t wait to see you on thursday!”

that was what joe said in one of his e-mails to me yesterday. sometimes i love the fact that we’re both journalists; other times, i don’t. this would be the latter.

our jobs typically require us to work some nights, though it’s usually me more than joe. this week, we’re not really going to be able to spend time together until tuesday. i worked late monday and tuesday nights, and he works late tonight. he was going to have to work late thursday night, but plans got changed. he’ll be telecommunting instead. yay.

i just think it’s funny that we sometimes will say, “i’ll see you in a couple of days!” it doesn’t matter. it makes it even better when we do have a night to ourselves.

the wedding party order

here’s a question for those of you who are married or are planning a wedding: how did you pick the order for your attendants? did you go by height after the maid/matron of honor and best man or by who is closer to you? it seems like going by height would look better, but i want those closer to me at the top of the line.

working on the anniversary gift

my parents’ 31st wedding anniversary is at the end of the month.

i always try to think of a unique gift for them. this year, i decided to make a slideshow to music of pictures on a dvd. my grandparents have sent me pictures from their childhoods and pictures of them together that i’d never seen. there are pictures of me and my brothers from babyhood up, pictures of the grandchildren and my half-sister and, of course, the terrible threesome: aj, julius and dizzy. at the end are the pictures of me and joe, showing the addition of a new member of the family. i think it’ll be great. my mom will love it. she’ll cry. 🙂

but i need some help from all my blogging pals. i’m trying to think of some songs to use that will match both my parents’ relationship and family. any suggestions? i’d really appreciate it!

4 months to go

on wednesday, it will be exactly four months until the wedding.

it’s time to get going on the exercise program. i’d love to lose 20 pounds by the wedding. i’ve been dieting, but it’s hard to find the motivation to bike for 30 minutes. i like to do it in the morning, but my arthritic knees are always hurting then. by the time i get home from work, i’m usually too tired. but, no more excuses! i want to be a semi-thin bride!

so here goes nothing. send me your words of wisdom! every little bit of motivation helps!
