False Alarm

We thought we might have a baby coming today. I woke up with really strong cramps that lasted about two hours. I called my doctor, and by the time the nurse called back they had basically stopped. I decided not to go in and be monitored since I figured that was that.

Two hours later, when I was at work, they started back up. The nurse had told me if they came back to go straight to L&D, so Joe and I left work and headed out. When we arrived, I was hooked up to the monitor and was having some pretty strong contractions. In fact, the look on the midwife’s face when she saw them made me think that she thought we were going to have the baby.

However, my cervix was still closed, meaning I wasn’t in labor. I was dehydrated, which they think was the source of the contractions, and several hours later, I was very well hydrated but still having contractions. I still hadn’t made any progress with my cervix, so they sent me home.

There is good news: my cervix was soft, and the doctor could touch Lucy’s head through the membrane covering my cervix. She has definitely dropped and is ready to rock and roll. She’s just waiting for Mommy’s cervix to cooperate! The nurse said she doesn’t think I’ll make it to my due date. She thinks Lucy will be here by Thanksgiving at the latest. My mom says within the next week, and Joe thinks it will be two more weeks.

So now I just endure the contractions until they become too hard to bear, or, in the nurse’s words, until I want to rip Joe’s head off. Then, we’ll be having a baby.

Wow!!! Oh my goodness! I remember going in for my last OB appointment and the doctor checking me, then saying, “We’re going to have a baby today!” It felt *so* surreal. Sorry about the false alarm, but it was just a dress rehearsal. šŸ™‚ It’s almost time. Wouldn’t it be cool to have your baby ON Thanksgiving?
