Chalkboards and Erasers

Today, I toured a brand-spankin’ new elementary school. Students there vote for the answers to math problems by using clickers attached to the classroom’s smart board. And, in the global lab (global lab, y’all!), students can take a virtual field trip by video chatting with children in other countries. Today, they were chatting with a class in Ghana, Africa.

When I was in elementary school, we had Flat Stanley (ours were life-size silhouettes). And Mavis Beacon (the only time we used one of the two computers in my 8th-grade classroom). And chalkboards. CHALK.  With erasers. That we clapped outside after school.

And, I caught myself saying, “When I was in elementary school…” just like my parents did, telling another reporter  about clapping erasers. Her eyes glazed over. And, I felt old.
