I’ve been thinking lately about adding a e-commerce type program to my business Web site so I can accept credit cards online. Right now, people who purchase cards from me send me a check and I send them the cards. It’s basically on the honor system. I really want to enable credit card processing, which would make it more secure on my end because payment is instantaneous, but I don’t know if it’s something I should do now or wait until later. There are several I’ve been looking at getting a merchant account at www.onlinecheck.com. The fee per transaction is relatively low and there are no annual fees, but there are monthly fees (which I suppose is normal since they have to make money somehow), and there’s a monthly minimum, which I take to mean a minimum number of credit card transactions per month. They do have a free 30-day trial period during which you have a free merchant account they only charge you per transaction. That’s a great way to test out the software and make sure it’s what I want. I haven’t totally decided if this is what I’m going to do, though I know that I’ll need to in the future as my business grows, but if I do decide to, I think adding it during the holiday season would be the best time to do so. I know I’ll be getting a lot of orders then.
