i love reading about peoples’ wedding plans. it makes me think back to my own wedding. jen at operation pink herring is one of the recently engaged, and today is her surprise virtual wedding shower. so today, i’m going to tell you all about the *horrible* gifts we received at our wedding.
one of our favorite parts of the wedding planning process was registering for our gifts. we picked four stores to give our guests an option, and when we visited each, joe had a blast running around with the gun we were given to scan everything we wanted.
i checked our registeries every.single.day until the wedding, hoping that the things i *really* wanted would be marked off as completed.
when our wedding day arrived, we had only received 10-20 things off our registeries. the gifts brought to our wedding didn’t increase that total. in fact, many of them were the most hideous things i had ever seen. two that stand out in my mind were a palm tree platter and a hot plate decorated with grapes and grape leaves. joe’s sister received the palm tree serving spoons for her wedding that match our platter, but *shhhh*. we don’t want her spoons arriving on our doorstep.
i wish i had pictures to show you just how truly awful these gifts were. but, they are buried in our storage room. they may be horrid, but they sure gave us a good laugh, and it’s a fun story to share with brides-to-be!

What is it with people and not shopping off the registry or just writing a check? Do they want to make their lives harder by hunting down the ugliest goods at Big Lots? And then, you have to write a thank you note for a piece of junk. That is the worst. When we moved, we gave our dud gifts the old heave-ho with very little remorse.
Thanks for joining the party!

Oh man, RA’s comment about Big Lots presents just made me snort water.

My sister got an antler bowl for her wedding. As in, a bowl made of deer/elk ANTLERS. Real ones. OMG the horror. Thankfully from the same couple we received a Target gift card. Phew!

oh dear! (no pun intended on the antler bowl!) I really hope Kyle and I don’t get anything we hate!

Yikes, those are some bad gifts! We got some corny hand-made, puff-painted “his and hers” pillowcases that immediately got shoved to the back of some closet. What is with people?

Picking registry gifts sounds SO exciting!!! 😀

I never have been able to figure out exactly what it is that makes people think that they would have a better idea of what you wanted for your new life together than YOU WOULD! I mean, seriously, what is with that? It’s a list of presents that I PICKED OUT, all you have to do is follow the list! Creativity is not encouraged 😉

lol you didn’t try to return them? We got 4 toasters… we never even regisitered for them because we already had one (I had my own place for almost 2 years before our wedding)… so we kept one and returned the rest… and omg those 3 other toasters came from 3 totally different stores… ugh…

Oh, man. I can’t wait to see what kinds of awful gifts we get. I have mixed feelings about registries — they are such a great, practical idea… but it’s also kind of weird to be like “this is what I want, but it for me!” that’s not going to stop us from registering, since I am always greatly relieved to just pick something off the registry and not have to worry if the couple will like it or not!
Thanks for the lovely post!

My sister got most of the good stuff from her registry! Hopefully I wont end up with any Big Lots cast offs! LOL Oh and I am glad you like reading my plans!

Big Lots is right! If you’re not buying off the registry, it better be cash or Tiffany’s, in my opinion!
