And so is every other part of my body, apparently. I have gained EIGHT pounds so far during the first trimester. I feel like that is an incredible amount of weight to gain, and I’m feeling kind of down about it. I’ve always known that I gain weight super easy, but this is ridiculous. I will admit that I have had some chocolate, but not EIGHT POUNDS worth. How much weight did you all gain during your first trimesters? Am I in the normal range??

You probably don’t want to compare yourself to me (I gained 60, 55, then 60 lbs), but I’m pretty sure I gained more (maybe much more, but I’ve blocked it out) than 8 lbs in my first trimester. So, don’t feel bad! Enjoy being a pregnant lady, you deserve it!
I’m not a doctor, but here’s my take on it. I would definitely *not* worry about weight gain as long as you’re eating healthily. You’ve probably read this already, but your baby gets all of the nutrition that he/she needs from you ~ depleting what’s available for you. So eating more than usual is a good thing as long as it’s not junk food. Plus, you now have a placenta and amniotic fluid. That counts for some of the weight gain! Eight pounds doesn’t sound like much to me.
Don’t compare yourself to anyone. We all gain weight while preggo differently. My sister is 4-6 weeks behind me and has gained more than I have. I barely gained 15 lbs with Megan, I was also sick the whole pregnancy and was overweight for me when I got pregnant with her. This time the doctors stopped my steroid treatments and other medications when we found out I was preggo, but those had helped put on some extra weight. I’m guesstimating I’ll probably hit about 20 lbs by the time Michelle is born, I’ve been able to eat more this pregnancy and I have a husband that is a good cook.
Like what Lisanne said, don’t worry about it and eat healthy. The less processed your food the better, and if you can buy organic do it! Don’t feel bad about indulging in some chocolate (I’ve had the worst cravings this time around for Godiva!) Take your prenate-vitas and have fun looking around online for healthy recipes that don’t skimp on flavor or healthy fats. I’ve become a huge fan of spinach and spring green salads with crumbled cheese, sliced up strawberries, roasted pine nuts and raspberry vinaigrette. Also pears and apples make great additions to salads and even pineapple. You don’t have to hold your gut in anymore! Enjoy it!
I agree with everyone above. It’s not how much you gain that’s important. It’s what/how you eat, but don’t stress over it one bit. I firmly believe that we stress enough about our weight, pregnancy is the one time that you just shouldn’t worry about it! After the baby is born, then you can worry again. Enjoy it for now! Also, your address hasn’t changed recently right? I have something to send you, but I want to make sure I have the right address…
I do remember getting in “trouble” from my OB/GYN for gaining 9lbs in four weeks…that’s when he gave the the soup and salad is a full meal speech. snort. Don’t worry about the weight, it’s all worth it 🙂
I agree with everyone else…you really can’t compare your weight gain with anyone else. You may gain quickly in the beginning and then slow down during the rest of the pregnancy. Eat healthy and I bet you’ll be fine.
Hey- just started reading your blog, and bookmarked it! Congrats on the baby. I gained 60 lbs during my pregnancy but only 2 of those was the first trimester. I ate too much my second trimester, and swelled by third trimester. Eek. My biggest advice is don’t compare yourself, if you breastfeed, it will come off easy. Make healthy habits at the beginning and keep moving (at least go walking) up until you have the baby. Happy incubating!
Oh yeah, and I *totally* can say from two experiences that breastfeeding makes the pounds come off *so* quickly!!! It’s amazing! At least, that was my experience.
Oh, and about the chocolate ~ do you like pudding? I *love* the sugar-free and fat-free pudding snack cups. Those really help with my chocolate craving!
I know with Lore I only gained 25 pounds the entire time with Lore… and so far with this one 5 pounds… but I’m not allowed to gain any weight with this one… so it is hard…
but don’t worry about it… you are going to gain some… your blood doubles in volumn or something like that… you also gain water weight… so relax and enjoy it…
Weight gain in pregnancy varies person to person. Some people will gain it all in one trimester and barely any in the next. Your doctor will keep track and should be monitoring the estimate of where you are headed in total for your pregnancy. Don’t worry 🙂
I agree with everyone here. Don’t worry! It is healthy and normal to gain between 20-32 pounds through out the entire pregnancy.
If you go for daily 20-30 minute walks now, it will make a world of difference in your delivery. At least, it did for me.
Then pushing the baby in a stroller and walking helps along with everything else you will be doing. It will come off…this is the one time to enjoy it!
Eight pounds? I’ve gained more weight on vacation. 🙂
