two years ago, my wallet was stolen. when i picked it up from the bank where it had been left, i could tell it had been rifled through, but neither my debit card nor my credit cards had been taken. that doesn’t mean, though, that someone hadn’t written down the card numbers.
last december, someone used my debit card number to make a purchase from a web site i had never heard of. i still have no idea how that happened. it could have been the same person who stole my wallet, though there was quite a gap of time in between, or someone could have written down my number when i went through a drive-thru restaurant.
i keep seeing commercials for lifelock. i see them on tv all the time, and just yesterday i heard some radio commercials. in fact, i think we play some on my station. you know, the ones that say, “hi, my name is (insert name here) and this is my real social security number”. lifelock says it can stop identity theft by keeping up with credit bureaus on your behalf, stopping pre-approved credit card offers from being mailed to you and through a program called walletlock, where if your wallet is stolen their representatives contact all your credit card companies for you. their advertising technique is plastering their ceo’s alleged social security number everywhere. of course, we’ll never know if that really is his social security number, but theoretically, it is.
have you guys heard about this company? if so, what do you think about it?

I’ve never heard of the company. But we’ve had our bank card number stolen before. We have NO Idea how it happened as we never lost our card or wallet or anything. Just one day we get a bill for an outragous amount. because our bank card was connected to our visa.
Luckily we got all our money back.
Did you get all your money back?
I’ve seen their commercials and a few print ads for that company, but I don’t know how it works or their reputation. I’d say your best line of defense right now would be to ask your bank to send you a new debit card – with a different card number, of course. I was suspicious of a cashier once who walked off with my card for about 7 or 8 minutes for no reason that was apparent to me. As soon as I got home, I called my bank and had them cancel that card and reissue me a new one. She had little time to screw me over – if that was her intention (you can never be too safe). And I got a new card in 3 days. Super fast.
I have seen the ads… but this is my thought… how do they keep the employees from taking your info? I would call and talk to your bank and see what they think is a good company for something like that…
