Our lawnmower is broken and we just haven’t had time to go get it fixed. We’ve been ridiculously busy this spring, and our growing lawn caught up with us.
So, Joe called our neighbor today to ask if we could borrow his mower. He said sure….but, he would have to charge us for it.
Seriously? We’ve never hesitated to loan items to people or help when needed. This reminds me of the time we ran off the side of the road, and a pickup truck driver who stopped offered to pull us out for $50.
Maybe I’m behind the times, but isn’t there still such a thing as helping someone out because it’s the nice thing to do? Whatever happened to being neighborly?

That is INSANE. I have NEVER heard of such a thing! It’s not like you called and asked the guy to actually do the mowing for you. How unneighborly!
LOL! What would he be charging you for? Wear and tear? People are funny.
Although, if its a gas mower, I would probably offer to buy a tank of gas for it in exchange for borrowing it. Maybe that’s what he’s worried about?
I forgot to include that Joe *did* offer to pay for gas. We always do that when we borrow something like a lawnmower or our friend’s truck. It’s only fair.
That’s ridiculous!! I would NEVER hesitate to let my neighbors borrow anything and the idea of charging them never crossed my mind.
It does remind me A LITTLE about my neighbor this past weekend. He asked if his friend could store a small trailer on our property for a couple of months. We said yes and it’s been there nearly a year now. This weekend he used it to take a bunch of stuff to the dump and asked if we wanted him to take anything of ours, so we ripped out an evergreen bush and asked him to take it. We offered to pay the dump fee ($7, even though our stuff amounted to about 1/20th of the load) and he was just about to say yes before his friend declined. I wouldn’t have minded paying, it wasn’t much money, but come on! We’ve been letting YOUR friend store the trailer on our land and you’re going to make us pay???
Ya, that’s crazy. Our neighbors are angry at us because we’ve REALLY let our backyard go, but they were so nice about it. The lent us their weedeater & even offered to come over & help us with it. We got through a little of it before our trip but we still have to tackle the rest. Now that Edward’s dad is dying & I have this unexplainable flu/sore throat thing, I’m afraid they’ll get mad before we can take care of the rest of the yard. But even being mad, they’d never charge us for the use of a mower! You have a crazy neighbor!
