when my company had open enrollment for benefits last year, our new insurance company gave us forms to fill out while we were there to speed up the process of preauthorization of drugs. i thought that was a fabulous idea as that process has given me such a headache in the past.
before my old insurance expired, i had a three-month prescription of enbrel filled, so i didn’t need to get a refill until now. i called it in to the pharmacy, and yesterday tried to pick it up. however, the pharmacist told us it hadn’t been preauthorized.
sigh.
i left our insurance rep a message last night, and this morning i was on the phone with customer service. it turns out it *was* preauthorized, but the new insurance company will only let expensive medicines like enbrel be filled through the mail order pharmacy. that would have been nice to know, oh, back during open enrollment.
i was transferred to the department that handles specialized medicines, and i, again, explained my predicament.
“when’s the last time you took your medicine?” the representative asked me.
“a week ago,” i said.
“so what are you going to do about it?”
what am *i* going to do about it? “that’s your job,” i told her. honestly, i have had it with insurance companies. i’m just tired of dealing with them, and that question just sent me over the edge. luckily, our company’s rep called me back and told me they had authorized me to get this refill from the pharmacy as the mail order pharmacy would take at least seven business days.
i guess nothing is hassle-free when it comes to insurance.

God, what a disaster. This whole mail-order preauthorization blah blah when it comes to prescription medication is just ridiculous. As is open enrollment and the complete lack of information when it comes to, I don’t know, EVERYTHING.
Gah. I’m glad you got it worked out, this time at least.
I hate insurance right now! How is it that we pay such a chunk of our paycheck (in my case, my husband’s paycheck) for the insurance, and then they give us the runaround when it comes to actually paying for things?? It’s very frustrating, and I’m sorry you’re having to deal with it. I am glad they filled your Enbrel though…thank goodness for that.
oh the stories I could tell you about insurance companies and the drug side of things… mail order is a crock! IT completely sucks… and I don’t see the point in it… I have had my meds taken out of our mail box etc… and had to pay for them again… 200 bucks x 2 is just crap… I hate Caremark and all of their employees… I think anyone that works for them is going straight to you know where lol…
