i picked up my lab results yesterday and faxed them to my mom to interpret. she called me back right away.
“i hate to tell you this, but you’re perfectly healthy.”
sigh. my thyroid is right in the middle of the normal range. from what i can tell, my hormone tests for pcos were normal (i’m going to talk to my obgyn about that). i just don’t get it. if i’m eating right, working out and nothing is wrong physically then why am i not losing weight? i am so sick and tired of seeing the same number on the scale every.single.morning.
of all the times i wanted something to be wrong with me, this was it.

My endocrinologist told me that he gets tons and tons of people who are convinced that they have a thyroid problem and are very upset to be told that they aren’t. Some of them will go to several more endocrinologists to have the same blood tests repeated and then when they all come back the same (obviously) they will scour the internet until they find some bogus website claiming it’s possible to have a thyroid problem even if the tests say otherwise.
Anyway, I’m sorry that you don’t have an explanation for why you aren’t losing weight. Keep at it, though. Hopefully it will happen eventually. Maybe start a structured program like Weight Watchers online to make sure you’re following a set pattern? Good luck!
I know you’ve probably already gone over all the possibilities, but could it be that you’re building muscle weight at the same rate you are losing fat?
I don’t know if this is the case for you, but I am the kind of person who can only lose weight if I REALLY eat way, way less, like 1,000 cals a day, and run/jog A LOT. Not just cardio on the elliptical, but like running. If I do those two things, I am basically starving and miserable all the time, but I will drop weight. If I eat 1,500 cals a day and do 45 mins on the elliptical I won’t lose weight either 🙁 Sucks….
I guess what I’m saying is maybe you need to shock your body a little?
Cady, you look fabulous. I’m so sorry the weight’s not coming off, but I swear you looked fantastic the last time I saw you!
Do you think if you tried the L.A. Weight Loss program again it would work? You lost SO MUCH weight when you were on that back in Dalton.
What ever you do, don’t forget that the number on your scale doesn’t define you as a person. You rock, and we all know it. 🙂
O.k. so you don’t have a medical reason as to why you are not losing weight. Be thankful. Seriously. That’s a good thing.
In our society there’s this thing about being thin, I hate it. Yes I battle it myself but that’s on my blog. You are a pretty girl who’s in a great career, you are an excellent writer, and married one of the good ones. Yes, even with all that there is still the desire to be thin.
I have banned all scales from my house for the past five years, it’s amazing how much happier I am not stepping on that thing twice a day.
Gee Cady, I’m sorry you’re so healthy, lol.
Truly, I am sorry that you haven’t gotten the answer to this issue. I know that must be frustrating. You always look great to me, but I know that probably doesn’t mean much to you. My mom sort of has the same issues. She fights the scale constantly and has to practically starve herself to lose weight. She has done ever fad diet you can think of. She’s doing Weight Wat.chers right now, and it seems to be working for her.
I am SO sorry, Cady! It has to be INCREDIBLY frustrating seeing the same number on the scale every single day. Maybe you’ll get an answer down the road ~ maybe it’ll just take time. Good luck!!!
i’m sorry you haven’t gotten any answers. i can empathize, i spent a large part of my life knowing there was something wrong with my stomach, but every test showed i was fine. it’s frustrating, but i am glad you are healthy! i think that sometimes it just takes time to notice a true difference. i know my mom was really successful with jenny craig and a personal trainer. i think you could probably do without the trainer, but she needed someone else to hold her accountable. she lost 50lbs in 2 years, but she worked really, really hard. i think she spoke with a nutritionist recently, because she no longer eats the jenny craig meals so she wanted to see what a healthy diet was. keep at it, you can do it!
besides, i think you already look great in your pictures!
I just looked at your other blog and the two things that came to me off the top of my head (keeping in mind that I am no expert) are to #1 – vary your exercise a bit more. I know you are somewhat limited in what you can do but maybe add swimming or turn your strength training into a circuit workout so you can get your heart rate up there too (I do a class at the gym like this but I am sure you can find a video or something). And #2 – look at more than just the calories that you are consuming – try to add more whole grains, fruit/veggies, and protein to your diet. I was just reading an article about 100 calorie packs which was commenting that yes – it is portion control and convenient, but there are much healthier snacks out there that are also 100 calories. The article made me think more about what I eat instead of how much.
But when it comes down to it, what do the numbers on the scale really mean? I weigh a good 10 pounds more than a friend of mine (same height), but she couldn’t even run a mile and I can bang 6 or 7 miles out on any given day. I’d rather weigh more yet be healthy, active and fit. I think that should be your goal – healthy, active and fit. Throw away the scale!!
Maybe you’re the weight you’re supposed to be.
Well I agree with someone up there who said you look great. Because you do.
I also know losing weight is work. As you have read * don’t know if you’re still reading* my weight loss blog. 6 glasses of water, 3 fruits and 3 vegetables, 2 milk, and 2 oils per day, along with your fiber, protein, whole grains. And remembering you have to eat all that, and plan all that into your day is work! but it gets VERY easy. So I’m guessing it’s not the amount you’re eating it’s what sorts of foods you’re eating.
Or your body is saying… I am happy at this weight.. leave me alone 🙂
did they test your male hormones… a lot of times they just do the female side… and that is how docs kept missing my PCOS… girly hormones normal… male ones way messed up…
