I finally was able to talk to my doctor today. Unlike the other doctors I’ve dealt with, she did not seem at all confident that I would be able to get pregnant on the Clomid, which really has shaken me up a bit. She said that she thinks I should go straight to IVF. I hate making such a big jump so soon, especially since the only thing wrong with me (so far, at least!) is my inability to ovulate on my own.
She said I can only do six cycles on Clomid (either with intercourse or IUI) before I have to stop because staying on it longer can increase my chances of ovarian cancer. We are setting up an appointment with her after my next cycle to discuss our options, but it looks like we’re leaning toward IVF. We’ll most likely make our final decision by the end of the year. That will give us time to save some money toward it so we don’t have to finance the entire amount. Since I have such a good response to Clomid, though, I’m hoping I won’t need a lot of the fertility meds and that we’ll be on the low end of the price spectrum.
So, that’s that. I’m bummed because I really thought we had a good chance to get pregnant without going to IVF, but it’s nice to know that next year I might be pregnant. Too bad that’s such a long way off.
Boy, that freaking sucks. I’m soooo sorry. I’m glad someone was finally honest with you rather than giving you false hope. Even though it is a MAJOR bummer, at least you can prepare and mentally ready yourself.
Well, at least you were able to talk to your actual doctor and get some honest-to-goodness feedback. You have a plan in place now, and that’s good! I hope that next year will be IT for you guys (or sooner, of course). Still praying for you. It’s so strange that you haven’t gotten your period yet, though!
I agree w/you. Since IVF is so expensive, I’d want to give clomid as much time as possible. However, I have to say that I don’t know anyone that has gotten pregnant on clomid. I have plenty of friends that have gotten pregnant thru IVF. For that reason, don’t get so down if the clomid doesn’t work. It’s not just you. And you still have other options. Although I know…they’re expensive options!
I’m a little surprised that your doc would make a statement like that considering this was the first cycle you guys have actually gotten to try with the Clomid (that’s right, right? ). It seems like she’d at least let you guys give it another month before making such a bold statement.
