Going to a wedding this past weekend made me think back to my wedding and the two weddings I’ve been in. The first wedding I was in was my best friend’s, and she picked out dresses at B. Moss that were super cute. I wore mine for quite a while afterward, and I’m hoping to be able to fit back into it after the baby is born.
Then, there was the second wedding. I was a bridesmaid in Joe’s sister’s wedding, and her color was green. I thought it was neat that she was going outside the “typical” colors because, really, I hadn’t seen green picked as a color before. We also were able to pick out our own bridesmaid dresses, which was a nice luxury, but that season there were absolutely NO green dresses anywhere. I cannot even count how many stores we went to before I finally picked the one dress that fit me at Macy’s. It wasn’t floor length like Joe’s sister wanted — it more like hit me in the middle of the calf — and it wasn’t the most attractive shade of green and was shiny, but it worked. And, frankly, I didn’t have a lot of time to continue searching for one.
However, I absolutely HATED it. I felt like such a dork wearing it, especially since the other bridesmaids were able to find floor length dresses, and now it is stuffed in the back of my closet with the rest of the dresses I only wore once. I probably should give it away to Goodwill because maybe someone would like it.
Not only was my dress awful, but the stylist who did my hair (and to this day I still cannot believe how much I paid him) basically plastered my hair to my head. I don’t look at all feminine in the pictures. If you looked at me from the front, I looked like I had a guy’s haircut. Seriously. It was awful.
Now it’s your turn to share. Have you ever been a bridesmaid and had to wear a dress that you thought was hideous? Tell me all about it!

I was standing in one of my friends weddings and we had these ugly lavender 2 piece silk dresses with pearl buttons on the front ,custom made. I had gone for my first fitting and then 2 months later, went for the final fitting. In front of the whole bridal party, the seamstress yells out, “Did you gain weight? I’m going to have to put elastic in the waistband!” I felt like such a dork. We had to buy these $65 shoes and have them dyed lavender. Worst wedding I ever had to stand in. I came home from the wedding and threw the dress in the trash. The worst thing was that the marriage only lasted a year. Big waste of money and time!
I didn’t hate the dress, and the color was pretty, but I didn’t get to try it on beforehand. It was “custom made” in a different city and I had to send my measurements AND like $200. When it came back, it didn’t fit me very well and it wasn’t even hemmed! For $200! I ended up only sending something like $100 because I told them the dress wasn’t finished. My grandmother had to do a lot of work on it. In the end, we looked like a circus because the only other girl in the wedding, wearing the same dress, was about three times my size. The style looked a lot better on her, actually.
Ha!! I have been in a few weddings where I really liked by dress…BUT I have been in 2 weddings where the dress (and matching hideous shoes) were awful!! The first was a light peach lacy type dress with capped sleeves. I don’t think that type of sleeve is flattering on anyone! The other was a darkish teal shiny dress with teal shoes and we had bright pink flowers in our hair and in the bouquets. My good friend was happy and that is all that counts, but everyone felt bad in the dresses!! The best wedding I was in, we all could pick out what we wanted- any style, any length, any shoes…the only parameter was that it had to be black. Everyone looked GREAT- we chose flattering dresses. I wore that one countless times for things because it was classic and looked good:-)
very informative, worth reading, thanks!
I seriously hope that none of my friends who were in our wedding will comment on the dress that I picked, haha 🙂
Oh yes! I was a bridesmaid at age 13 (for my babysitter). It was a rose-colored dress (that part was pretty), but the material, and the way it gathered – ew! Plus, I wore glasses and looked like a complete dork at that age. It’s painful looking back at pictures, and I’ve even had people who didn’t recognize me!
Oh hecK Ya! I think the bride I was a maid of honor for wanted to make look as horrible as possible on purpose! I also, wrote a blog post about this..haha
One was one of the uglist colors ever known to mankind.
The other ws featured in People Magazine’s “Worst Bridesmaid Dress” contest and came in on the top thirty. It was also worn by Katherine Heigl in 27 Dresses. The worst part is, I am not even friends with the chick anymore-such a waste!!
Hi, I just started reading your blog…I’m a friend of Lisanne’s. I can gladly say the bm dress I wore for her wedding was great, although I had a disagreement with the dress shop lady as to what size to order. I wear a size 8, she wanted to order a size 12, saying the dresses ran small. I refused and we compromised on a size 10. It, of course, was too big, but my mom helped me adjust it in a few places and it looked fine come wedding day.
Well what? No pictures?? Just kidding! I’m so glad everything is going so well in your pregnancy. You’re a third of the way there! Yay!
I was in a good friend’s wedding. She picked out nice skirts/tops for bridesmaids. I chose cute dresses for my bridesmaids since I wanted it to be something they could wear again like to church and to make the wedding photos looks nice. 😉
Never been a bridesmaid, and my own wedding was semi-formal, casual, so everyone got to wear what they wanted. The guys did the tuxs thing, but it worked.
When I used to be thin, I never fit into any of the dresses that were chosen. So all of them looked awful on me. At least it wasn’t the fault of the bride. But, what a terrible time I had during those weddings!
