I get paranoid when I hear a car drive up my street now.
That’s probably because I was basically threatened today by a guy from an investigative service.
He was looking for a woman who apparently used to live in our house. We constantly get mail for her, but I never think much about it and throw the letters away. Today, the guy came by and asked if I was her. When I said I wasn’t, he said, “Really….” in the tone used when you don’t believe someone.
Then, he eyed my car and said, “I’m looking for a 2008 Honda…” like he thought I was her and had traded the Honda in for a Mustang.
I told him I had no idea who this woman is, and he gave me a card for the investigative service and said, “You need to get this taken care of or else me or my night guy will be back out to harrass you.”
Then, he sat outside my house in his tow truck for about 10 minutes. I was on the phone with Joe, and he was about to call 911 when the guy finally left.
Joe called, but the business was closed for lunch. I told my dad, an attorney, what happened, and he called and left them a *nice* message telling them to leave me alone. When Joe called back just after 1 p.m., they said they would take us off their list.
I find it very hard to believe that they would just take Joe’s word for it when he told them I wasn’t the woman they were looking for. I would expect them to want proof of my identity.
So now, I’m going to be a little paranoid whenever I hear a car drive by.

Freaky! I would DEFINITELY call the police, like ASAP, to file a report. It’s good to have an official paper trail in case anything happens again. I’m so sorry 🙁
If it was a private agency, I would absolutely call the police so there is documentation of the encounter.
I would definitely let the police know of this encounter along with you now have a report on the incident should it happen again.
OMG! That would scared the geezes out of me lol. It was scary enough when at 2am in the morning 2 police women came to our door and didnt believe me that we werent the people they were looking for. I was all sleepy and they were with all these questions I was like “huh? I have no idea what your talking about” I was scared then lol. Hope things go well for you ><
Agree with the above comments, put 911 on your speed dial and don’t be afraid to use it. I know they are trying to find someone and she’d probably claim to be someone else, but they have no right to terrorize you in your home!
What everyone else said . . . file a police report before he comes back, so they have a record of the encounter. Otherwise, if he does show up again, it’ll be your word against his.
Call the police. At least report it. That way if something happens they have it on record. Report the company and get the police to call them or something if they can. I don’t know exactly what they can do, but at least call the police and ask what can be done. Better to be safe than sorry. Let us know!!
I would second notifying the police and also complaining to the Better Business Bureau–otherwise they will keep up threatening innocent people. They should at least know what the person they are seeking looks like, incompetant much?
You have received great advice. That is a bit like harassment from that guy. Grrr
I was in a situation where I was getting someone else’s mail for awhile and he was being looked for. My advice to anyone who gets the wrong mail is to send it return to center or just write “not at this address.” Magazines are one thing, but when things come that look like important documents, the sender will assume that the person lives there as they were accepted.
That would have freaked me out. Maybe Joe just levelled with them and told them how long you guys have lived there but maybe he also told them he’d call the police?
I’m just happy to hear you’re OK and that this misunderstanding seems to be over. Try to relax… 🙂
You should write “not at this address” and return the letters to sender. That would help lessen the amount of mail you get for her.
That would freak me out. I guess collections people are getting even more agressive with the economy in shambles like it is.
I hope you don’t have anymore incidents.
Yes, I would do all that is mentioned here to have a paper trail. Also, if you have or receive any more mail for that person, I would take it to the post office. They may have a form that you can fill out to refuse her mail coming to you.
Oh no~how terribly horrible for you! I would follow the advice that many others have stated here & file a police report~just so it’s documented! Hope you don’t have any more visits from them! (((hugs)))
Good grief! That’s awful!!! How scary! I second what everyone else above has said.
we have all kind of crazies looking for people that used to live here or have our phone number… I get about 20 collection phone calls a week for these people… and somehow they were able to buy a couch at a local department store but hadn’t picked it up… so the store kept calling and I kept telling them they weren’t us… but I have never had someone come to my door looking for them… i think I would pee myself if they did…
Definitely a scary situation. This investigative person should not have threatened you though. A legitimate agency would not do that. They need to get their facts straight. If there is a governing/licensing board or agency, I would definitely report this.
How scary! This is not what you need at all, but especially now. Please call the police and give them the info from the card and tell them what happened. And keep the phone with you at all times.
Though late with my comments, I vote with everyone who said to call and report them to the police. Too weird!
