Our ceiling collapsed last Monday night. I was sitting on the couch getting ready to turn on “24” when I heard a crack. I saw the crack from the water damage we’ve had spread farther across and then the ceiling just collapsed. It barely missed hitting me. Luckily, Lucy was on the other side of the room and didn’t get hit either, though some dust did land on her.

The irony? The roofers were supposed to come out that Wednesday to start working on replacing the roof and chimney. Apparently, the previous owner of the house — who fixed it up and flipped it — used board on the chimney that isn’t supposed to get wet, which one would assume means it shouldn’t be used on the outside of a house. It’s something our inspector should have caught, but that’s a whole other story. So, water has been leaking in from there (and boy, have we had some *rainy* days in the last year), causing two cracks in our ceiling, one above our fireplace and the other by the window. We also had wind and hail damage to our roof, which is why the entire thing is being replaced.
Luckily, the roofers were able to come out the next day to clean up our living room and fix our ceiling. Yesterday, they replaced our entire roof, and today they’re rebuilding our chimney and beginning the cosmetic work on our ceiling. I can’t wait for all this to be over. This new roof better last until we buy a new house!
OMG that’s scary! So glad nobody got hurt and it looks like it will be a relatively easy fix!

Oh, WOW! So glad you two are ok!!!
Hi -I’m so sorry abour your ceiling! However, I hope you can give me the name of the roofing company or contractor you hired. I have a leak in my ceiling as well & I live in Atlanta (Lawrenceville specifically) and am in the process of getting estimates. I’d appreciate the referral.
thanks!
