My goal for today’s Turkey Trot was 54 minutes. I didn’t exactly make that. I did it in 49:55. I was pretty darn proud of myself. The best part? I ran the last half mile. Yes, my arthritic knees held up long enough for me to run across the finish line.
It was a tough race. It wasn’t the 3.2 miles that was hard. It was the bitter, bitter cold. It was about 18 degrees out when we started, and it was 16 degrees when we finished. We walked and danced around before the race began trying to keep warm. It didn’t really help. Our fingers and toes were frozen. By the time I reached the 1-mile mark, I couldn’t feel my toes. I was completely numb.

About 2 miles in, I started to warm up more, and I was at the point where I was even considering taking off my hat and gloves. It was nice because I really thought I was going to be freezing the whole time. Around that point, I saw Joe running back toward me, and I was slightly confused. I hadn’t seen any other runners doubling back. He had already finished and come back to finish with me. That was probably one of the sweetest things he’s ever done. I was proud of him too. His goal was 24 minutes, and he finished in 23:30, which is an awesome time. He had a rough time with the cold also though. I think that may have slowed everyone down. It’s just so hard to get moving when it takes so much longer for your blood to circulate.
It was hard, but it was fun. We both felt good afterward, and we both beat our goals. That’s what’s important.

Goodness, I get numb just reading about the temperature… This was truly amazing – to participate and finish this race – and even achieve your time goals despite the rough conditions. Congratulations, you more them deserved them (both of you)! 🙂
