I get paranoid when I hear a car drive up my street now.
That’s probably because I was basically threatened today by a guy from an investigative service.
He was looking for a woman who apparently used to live in our house. We constantly get mail for her, but I never think much about it and throw the letters away. Today, the guy came by and asked if I was her. When I said I wasn’t, he said, “Really….” in the tone used when you don’t believe someone.
Then, he eyed my car and said, “I’m looking for a 2008 Honda…” like he thought I was her and had traded the Honda in for a Mustang.
I told him I had no idea who this woman is, and he gave me a card for the investigative service and said, “You need to get this taken care of or else me or my night guy will be back out to harrass you.”
Then, he sat outside my house in his tow truck for about 10 minutes. I was on the phone with Joe, and he was about to call 911 when the guy finally left.
Joe called, but the business was closed for lunch. I told my dad, an attorney, what happened, and he called and left them a *nice* message telling them to leave me alone. When Joe called back just after 1 p.m., they said they would take us off their list.
I find it very hard to believe that they would just take Joe’s word for it when he told them I wasn’t the woman they were looking for. I would expect them to want proof of my identity.
So now, I’m going to be a little paranoid whenever I hear a car drive by.
